Welcome to the Energy Workgroup.

This workgroup’s objective is to draw upon the knowledge and expertise of the many individuals and organizations around the world who are most knowledgeable about the worldwide production and distribution of energy to make a plausible estimate of what would be required to meet the one-time goal of providing every individual on planet with an adequate supply of energy, and what would be needed thereafter to maintain its availability at that level.

The first step, therefore, is to identify those expert individuals and organization. Below is the list as it has been developed thus far. If you happen upon additional information sources that you believe will assist in this effort, please let us know by way of the CONTACT form. Or, if you would like to engage in your own line of research, let us know the results. And finally, if you feel the concept of the Whole Earth Design Project is something that you may wish to become involved in, let's get acquainted.

"Although the growth in the use of renewable energy sources has been spectacular, it will take decades before renewables will be able to provide a sizeable contribution to meeting energy demand. In the meantime, the world should focus on increasing efficiency across the entire energy value chain. Improving performance of power plants around the world can make a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions and other pollutants. A one percentage point improvement in the efficiency of a conventional pulverised coal combustion plant results in a 2-3% reduction in CO2 emissions. Highly efficient modern coal plants emit almost 40% less CO2 than the average coal plant in service at the present time." -- World Energy Council

"Modern energy services are crucial to human well-being and to a country’s economic development. Access to modern energy is essential for the provision of clean water, sanitation and healthcare and for the provision of reliable and efficient lighting, heating, cooking, mechanical power, transport and telecommunications services. It is an alarming fact that today billions of people lack access to the most basic energy services: as World Energy Outlook 2012 shows 1.3 billion people are without access to electricity and 2.6 billion people rely on the traditional use of biomass for cooking, which causes harmful indoor air pollution. These people are mainly in either developing Asia or sub-Saharan Africa, and in rural areas." -- International Energy Agency
